Finally, after a long negotiating process, it has been agreed that Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez will have a rematch on September 15th. Canelo and Golovkin on their first meet in September 16th produced a draw which was so controversial where most viewers favored the work of Kazakh who was undefeated.
Originally, the two figures were supposed to meet each other for the battle on the rematch of IBF, WBC and WBA which was scheduled to be on May 5th. The rematch failed after Canelo failed in his drug test. Oscar La Hoya the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions sometimes back declared that there is no fight and there is not going to be any fight between Canelo and Golovkin. About two hours later, he retweeted that there will be a fight on the 15th September. The big question is, so what happened?
On the 5th May, the rematch between these two Golovkin and Canelo was cancelled after a positive test which proved Canelo was under influence of clenbuterol. The promoter of Canelo, Golden Boy Promotions, defended the test and blamed the presence of the substance as a contamination of the meat he had taken. From such result, Nevada had to pass a suspension to Alvarez for about six months in April by Nevada Athletic Commission. Gennady was already happy because of the match which was before him. His promoter said that Golovkin was already too happy because of that respect he was getting for getting into a rematch with Canelo. The team was generally happy for having to take part in the boxing sport one of the biggest fights worldwide. All the due respect was directed to the legacy of Golovkin. But with plans of a rematch, the team anticipated that it would promote him and the team more compared to his first matches. Golovkin had dispatched Vanes Martirosyan so fast on the normal HBO and now was suggesting that the rematch be played on the 50-50 revenue split which was opposive to the previously agreed grade of 65-35 favoring Canelo.
Golovkin was not a starter in the event Golden Boy Promotions and in the last year’s September fight had managed to beat Canelo at a split of 70-30 revenue. The guy was just to move to shut down then move to Daniel Jacobs showdown. Golovkin did not take much time with his team to move the 50-50 demands and he was now willing to do 55-45 split with Canelo. Golden Boy Promotions was not interested in such yet and so upped the offer up to 60-40. De La Hoya has given a firm deadline where Golovkin should accept the last offer at 57.5-42.5. at around noon, Golovkin had not accepted the offer and so this became a death blow. Eric Gomez the president of Golden Boy and Tom Loeffler the promoter of Golovkin did a deal at last-minute negotiating for the sides and they struck the deal. The final percentage split of revenue they agreed on is not publicly disclosed until the match day.
Since the turns and twists and also the stupid politics when it comes to boxing have finally resulted in the desired outcome, everybody is now looking forward to seeing the two giants continue on September 15th their rivalry in the rematch event which will be held in Las Vegas T-Mobile Arena. The card will be broadcasted by HBO for the amount to be paid per view. The first matchup where the two first met, they fought at a split draw which was so controversial. Adelaide Byrd the boxing judge and UFC veteran gave the Alvarez horrendous scorecard of 118-110 which drew attention throughout the world and destroyed the so entertaining event. The business for that tournament was so spectacular attracting 1.4 million payment for each view and also a pay of $27 million for the live gate. from the match, Canelo earned around $50 million and Golovkin his colleague earned $20 plus million.
Remember that its only Golovkins WBA and WBC belts which are in use and that the guy was stripped off the IBF title he held after fighting the unbeaten Ukrainian Derevyanchenko one of the mandatory challengers he was exposed to. Since then the IBF ordered the winner to fight the giant Daniel Jacobs come next match.
